My American Four Square

So, I thought the best way to share my adventures in home ownership was to make a new blog.  The posts may end up being a bit haphazard with no set schedule. However, I will try to make them pretty regular.

Here is my American Four Square. It was built in 1930 and has some features particular to that period of architecture known as the Arts and Crafts Movement.  So far, I've learned that it is not truly a style of house in itself as much as it is a variation on the Prairie Home style developed by Frank Lloyd Wright.  I didn't know this until I began reading about Craftsman homes, which I have always loved, and then found out that the floor plan of the American Four Square has many of the same architectural details of the Craftsman, yet lends itself better to the optimal use of the space inside the structure.  Although right now its somewhat dilapidated appears would give one to doubt its soundness as a structure, I have had it thoroughly inspected and have secured a renovation loan as part of my mortgage to address its sorry appearance.  I am simply in love with this house (except the kitchen, which I hate).

Home sweet Four Square:

This photo is from before I owned it and the tenant the former owners had living in it left a bunch of junk behind both inside the house and out in the back yard.
